So do Whovians really care about animals? Let’s see.
- Save Bumblebees by reintroducing a species to the UK? ✔️
- Train Melody to be the perfect canine companion for a wounded veteran? ✔️
- Support critical scientific research to save whales? ✔️
- Rescue dozens of Spanish Greyhounds? ✔️✔️✔️✔️
Now what animal would be the PERFECT one to be supported by a bunch of runners who complete distances at their own pace?
Whovian Running Club is thrilled to announce our charity partner for Event Five: Turtle Conservancy!
The Turtle Conservancy is dedicated to protecting threatened turtles, tortoises, and their habitats worldwide.
Here’s an example: the Geometric Tortoise is one of the most imperiled tortoise species in the world. Originally widespread in the “fynbos habitat” of the Western Cape province of South Africa, near-complete conversion of this habitat to vineyards, orchards and wheat monocultures has decimated the tortoise population. In 2015, the Turtle Conservancy purchased one of the largest remaining fynbos habitat patches where the tortoise still thrives, forming the Geometric Tortoise Ecosystem Preserve. This preserve contains 80% of the remaining Geometric Tortoises on the planet! The Conservancy was recently made aware that the owner of an adjacent 34 hectare farm intends to plow this land, irreversibly destroying its biodiversity value.
This is where WRC comes in: we’re going to raise funds to help purchase this land and preserve it for the Geometric Tortoise!
Be back here tomorrow at Noon EDT, as we announce Event Five and start our mission to save a species! #SlowAndSteady 🐢
